WE'RE JUST GETTING WARMED UP!

St. Thomas Moore must still be sore about losing the Division 1 Championship to SVdP  last season, because they took it to us!  Hats off to them. They played a great game!   However, we're still in the hunt, because there is no consolation bracket in this tourney.  If you're still playing, you're playing for the trophy!

We go again tomorrow 5/11/11 at Brent Mayne Field 6:00 PM vs  the winner of today's St. Ann vs St. John the Baptist game.

Coach Bob, our prayers are with you.

Go Crusaders!

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Happy Mother's Day baseball Moms.

Thanks for for all the time you spend in traffic getting us where we need to be.  Thank you  for keeping our uniforms looking spiffy.  Especially when you have to search for them in the back of our closets, or under our beds because sometimes we forget.

And thanks for reminding us to bring a water bottle, or our jacket or our baseball mitt.  Because sometimes we forget.  And thanks for the snacks!

Thank you for sitting in the stands with white knuckles when we are trying to get out of a tough inning, and for the hug when we strike out with runners on base.

You're the best and we don't tell you nearly often enough.  Because sometimes we forget.

SVdP WINS BY FORFEIT 1-0 OVER NOTRE DAME

Well, we were all looking forward to the final showdown with our old rivals.  Sometimes things just don't go as planned.  Notre Dame's players had a tourney they couldn't miss, so they were unable to field enough players for our Saturday matchup.   Next up is the CSAL tourney.  Schedule should be posted on Monday.

VARSITY LOOKS IMPRESSIVE IN 14-9 WIN OVER ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

When the umpire gives a compliment about your team's play after a game, you know you're doing something right.   The Varsity Crusaders looked sharp in a 14-9 win over SJB this afternoon Garland Park.  The Crusaders posted 14 runs on 9 hits, while stranding only 3.  Big Ben became the first Crusader to go 3 for 3 this season!   The pitching staff pulled its weight striking out 9 of 27 while allowing just 4 hits.  Our defense was, for the most part, solid.
It's true, paybacks are a killer.

Great job Crusaders!   Your hard work is beginning to pay off!

VARSITY REMATCH AGAINST SJB AT GARLAND PARK AT HIGH NOON

St. John the Baptist is coming to our neck of the woods for a 12:00 PM game at Garland Park.
The Crusaders can still taste the victory snatched away by SJB in a late inning rally, on a cold, rainy night at Sandstone Park only two weeks ago.  You gotta believe this will be a good one!

VARSITY FALLS TO ST. MARY'S 15-2

Sometimes the score doesn't tell the whole story. There were some definite bright spots in the game vs St. Mary's on Wednesday.   Our underclassmen really stepped up and made some great defensive plays.  They can be proud of their perfomance.    We'll continue working and improving with every practice.

OPENING DAY

This was sent to me by a friend who is a fellow devotee of our national pastime.
Thank you Dickson.

ESPN read this poem on the air before the Red Sox v. Yankees game last season.
Some words are so good, they bear repeating.

Let me show you a land
the greatest of all
with borders that stretch
from the spring to the fall.

Emerald fields plush with diamonds
and pearls gleaming white
where meatballs become taters
soaring into the night.

A land of hot corners
where hoses throw heat
into your kitchen
where there's plenty to eat.

There's pickles, there's pepper
there's peas, and there's cheese
And shoestrings making catches
with the greatest of ease.

Many eye-pleasing sights
also found on display.
An ace that throws deuces, a tailor-made double play.

Ducks on a pond
wait for springing line drives
to hitch a ride home
on pop-ups and slides.

This land welcomes all
to dream and to play
This land is Baseball,
It's Opening Day

BASEBALL CLINIC RECAP

Thanks to all of the players who came out to the clinic today.   You all looked to be in great form for pre-season.  Let's keep on building those skills!    If you couldn't attend, don't worry, as you haven't missed anything that we won't review time and time again this season.  We believe in mastering fundamentals!

FIELDING GROUND BALLS:
Wide Base- Approach the ball, spread the feet and get your behind down low.   Extend the hands out in front to receive the ball with throwing hand on top to handle a bad hop.  Gather the ball out of the glove pulling it toward the chest, with the throwing hand on top.   Bring it to the ear in a "J" stroke.  Peg the ball to your target by rotating hips (navel), arm, hand and toward the target.

CONTACT HITTING:
Establish A Solid Base- Spread the feet as wide as is confortable and put a comfortable athletic bend in the knees to accomodate a violent rotation of the upper body.

Arms and Hands- Rotate around an upright, linear spine.   If back shoulder drops and the spine assumes an upside down "J" shape during the swing, it is a recipe for a pop fly, not a line drive.

Feet- Align the toes.
  • Don't allow the front foot to be closer to the plate than the back foot, it inhibits hip rotation.
  • The front foot takes a soft step which helps with timing the pitch as well momentum transfer.
  • Once the front foot is down, keep it solid.   .
Rotate to Contact- Explosively rotate the hips (navel) and hands to the ball.
  • Keep the "L" bend in your front arm intact until contact.
  • Punch the top hand  as you rotate the top hand palm toward the sky.   Extend and extend again at contact , throwing the hands and straightening the elbows toward the pitcher.
Details of the "load" will be discussed next clinic along with perhaps the most important part of hitting, "seeing the ball".

HITTER'S PLAN:  All hitters need a plan.

Inside Fastball:   Hope for this pitch, you'll see it coming. Start the swing early, make contact well in front of the plate to pull it.   No matter what else happens, don't let an inside fastball by you.

Outside Fastball:  Wait, and wait some more and "let it in the kitchen".  Make contact with the ball as it crosses the middle of plate.  By waiting, a normal swing will take this pitch to the opposite field.

Fastball Down the Middle:  Make contact just in front of the plate to hit it back up the middle.

Breaking Balls:  Look for the spin. Start your hips but keep your hands back and wait, and wait some more (until you're almost sure it's too late ), then swing.

Two Strikes:  "Choke and Poke."  Choke up an inch for bat control.  If the pitch is off the plate, or just above the dirt, you're swinging.  It is better to take an epic hack and look like a champ going down than to have the ump call strike three with the bat on your shoulder.    If the pitch is high above the letters, take it for a ball.
